Is Money Heist based on a true story?

Money Heist is a fictional story created by Álex Pina, however, there are lots of elements within the drama that take their cue from real-life.

Seasons one and two followed the gang and their exploits as they planned and robbed the Royal Mint of Spain in an 11-day heist.

The heist was orchestrated by the Professor (played by Álvaro Morte), who enlists a group of questionable figures with specialist skills to carry out the heist.

They robbed the mint without stealing from anyone as the money was freshly printed.

The new series will see them trying to plan another heist to save one of the gang Rio (Miguel Herrán), who has been captured in Panama.

Perhaps the most obvious parallels to the real world are the costumes the gang wear during their heist.

WHERE IS MONEY HEIST SEASON 3 FILMED?

The masks are a direct reference to Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and his iconic moustache.

Dalí may have been chosen due to his rejection of societal norms in his work in the early 20th Century.

The artist may have had anti-capitalist leanings given that much of his work during the Dada Movement which sought to question all aspects of society, according to The Tate.

Meanwhile, the distinct red jumpsuits worn by members of the gang could also be a reference to socialism and the ideals of the distribution of wealth among the people.

Throughout the course of the show we hear a version of the song Bella Ciao performed by Manu Pila, which author Vladimir L. Marchenkov says in his book Arts and Terror (2014) is thought to be connected to the anti-fascist resistance.

Money Heist creator Pina explained to NSS Magazine: “A song that reminds me of childhood and that the whole world knows, a hymn of resistance as the same series is, as long as there is resistance there is hope even if they do not have the faintest idea if they manage to get out of there.”

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF MONEY HEIST SEASON 3?

All of these small details seem to symbolise the professor and indeed the gang’s ethos of breaking away from the capitalist system they are stuck in.

Even season three continues with the theme of fighting the system with the tagline: “Join the resistance.”

Season three will see the story taken to the next level with at least seven different timeframes.

Pina explained to Variety: ”We want the series to grow and to be much better in many ways.”

He continued: “It’s a great challenge for the spectator to put together the puzzle. It allows you to change aesthetics, but also genre.

“You can move the viewers this way and that, so that the series is never monotonous.”
