Borna Coric reveals his disbelief at Roger Federer’s Wimbledon final display

Federer and Djokovic battled for four hours and 57 minutes on Centre Court with the world No 1 winning in a final set match tiebreak at 12-12.

As the match went on, many expected the 37-year-old legs of Federer to tire but the Swiss dispelled those worries to stay with Djokovic in a dramatic match.

It was ultimately not enough for Federer to win but Coric was in awe of what he saw from the two players and expressed his desire to reach their level.

“During the Wimbledon final, I slept a little bit in the first set, but we all knew about Novak’s mental and physical abilities, they’re incredible,” he said at the Croatia Open.

“And Roger, I can not believe a 38-year-old can play at this level of play. He can play for five hours without getting physically worse.

“We still have a lot to learn from them, their level of play is just fascinating. You can not imagine how mentally difficult it is.

“In any case, what is certain is that I am not yet at this level, but by working hard, I can approach them. But by working hard and being a bit lucky, I can.

“Not that I will play tennis at 38 but now there is a new trend, maybe when I’m 33, I may be more experienced and I will give you a different answer.”

Coric was speaking at the Croatia Open in Umag where he was making his return from injury.

The 26-year-old missed Wimbledon due to an abdominal injury but was back competing at his home tournament.

However, the second seed crashed out of the event, losing 6-2 3-6 6-1 to Italian qualifier Salvatore Caruso on Thursday.

“I didn’t really feel the balls at the beginning. I was also a bit slow on the court and my reaction was not there,” Coric said.

“Salvatore is a great player, especially on clay. I watched him playing at the French Open and he is much better than his ranking is showing. He was also the better player today.

“I felt good on court today and didn’t feel any pain. That’s the most important thing.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t win this match in front of my home crowd.

“I enjoyed playing today. The atmosphere was unbelievable and gave me some extra motivation.”
