Hand luggage: Flybe reveal how to avoid additional baggage charge as cabin size explained

Flybe carries eight million passengers a year across its flight routes – with summer a peak time for travel. Britons who plump for the UK airline can expect budget fares for travel between 81 airports in the UK and Europe. Yet saving money on a plane ticket can often mean compromising on hand luggage space, with Express.co.uk previously revealing budget brand Ryanair’s strict cabin baggage policy. The airline has outlined its restrictions, as well as a key way passengers can “avoid” hefty excess luggage fees.

Its website states: “Flybe passengers can carry one standard cabin bag measuring no more than 55 x 35 x 20cm including wheels and handles.

“You can also take a smaller under seat item such as a laptop or a handbag. Both items must weigh no more than 10kg combined.

“Your cabin bag will be subject to compliance checks.

“If your cabin bag is too big, you will not be able to take it into the aircraft cabin.

“Your bag will be transferred to the aircraft hold and a £50 charge payable by card will be applied.”

Yet as a way to avoid this, the brand has suggested how holidaymakers can swerve it.

It stated: “Avoid airport baggage charge and add hold baggage to your booking online up to two hours before your flight.”

Therefore travellers will be able to add extra baggage at a cheaper fee, rather than waiting for airports charges.

Flybe states its guidelines should help a speedier boarding process, and allow planes to depart on time.

It should also create more space on board.

Meanwhile, Flybe was forced to clarify its future earlier this year, following the collapse of former airline rival Flybmi.

A spokesperson for Flybe took to Twitter to reassure holidaymakers they were not the same company, and put: “We are very sorry to hear about the situation with the competing British regional airline Flybmi and our thoughts are with their employees during these difficult times.

“Flybe has nothing to do with Flybmi and our flights continue to operate as normal.”

Passengers had been sent into a panic by mistaking the two firms for each other.

Flybmi ceased trading earlier this year after going into administration, cancelling all flights with immediate effect.
