EU accused of Nazi-style ‘appeasement’ over Iran nuclear deal by Israel’s Netanyahu

He was speaking after the European signatures to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal announced their intention to stick with the agreement. Tensions soared after President Trump withdrew the US from the agreement in May 2018. The European Union, along with member states Germany, the UK and France, says it will stick to the agreement.

On Tuesday EU foreign affairs high representative Federica Mogherini commented: “For the time being none of the parties to the agreement has singled their intention to revoke.”

Whilst Iran has recently breached parts of the agreement Ms Mogherini said the violations are “reversible” and not “significant”.

The reaction triggered a furious reaction from Mr Netanyahu, a fervent opponent of the Iranian deal.

Responding on Twitter he claimed it “remains me of the European appeasement of the 1930s”.

The Israeli leader added: “There are probably some in Europe who will not awake until Iranian missiles fall on European soil.

“In any case, we will do everything to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”

Iran has repeatedly insisted its nuclear programme is peaceful and not aimed at acquiring a nuclear bomb.

Last year Trump justified his decision to pull the US out of the agreement by saying Iran wasn’t honouring its spirit, by continuing to develop ballistic missiles and fund terrorist groups around the Middle East.

British foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has said there is a “small window” to save the Iran deal, even without US participation.

He commented: “Iran is still a good year away from developing a nuclear weapon.

“We think there is still a closing, but small, window to keep the deal alive.”

Tensions between Iran and the UK surged earlier this month when British Royal Marines seized an Iranian oil tanker off Gibraltar which was allegedly heading for Syria.

In response Iranian naval vessels surrounded a British tanker in the Persian Gulf and had to be warned off by a Royal Navy warship.
