Dark Money ending explained: What happened at the end?

Dark Money has left viewers reeling after the harrowing show created and written by Levi David Addai aired its finale tonight (July 16). The show follows a 14-year-old boy cast in a Hollywood film who is sexually abused by one of the producers. The mini-series reveals the implications as his parents opt to sign a non-disclosure agreement and take a £3 million pay-out to stay silent. So what happened at the end of the tense BBC drama?

What happened at the end of Dark Money?

Isaac is alive

At the end of episode four of Dark Money, Isaac Mensah (played by Max Fincham) attempted suicide after an article is published revealing the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of Jotham Starr (John Schwab).

His sister Jess (Olive Gray) told the story to a journalist before she told Isaac, who then barricaded himself in his room and took an overdose.

When the final episode opens, viewers were transported a few days later and it was slowly revealed that Isaac was recovering in hospital and hoping to leave soon.

Viewers got their first glimpse at Isaac in the hospital as a doctor says that he is okay to go home.

The show also revealed that his mother Sam (Jill Halfpenny) had moved out of the family home and will be bringing Isaac home to live with her away from his father Manny (Babou Ceesay).

Early in the final episode, both Sam and Manny were brought into the offices of Jotham Starr’s lawyers.

After the abuse was revealed in episode one, the parents signed a non-disclosure agreement and received a £3 million payout to keep their silence.

But when the story about Jotham was published in the paper, the lawyers threatened to sue the Mensahs unless they issued a public denial.

Sam refused to do this and instead decided to give an anonymous interview to a US website about what happened with the blessing of her son Isaac.

During the tearful interview, she revealed about taking the settlement: “At first we tried to convince ourselves that we had done the right thing that there was no other option but there was.”

Manny attacks Jotham

Viewers were first given a hint at what Manny would do to Jotham at the beginning of the episode in a flash-forward scene.

Later, viewers saw him tell Jotham’s lawyers that he would deny what happened in the newspaper if he can speak to him, agreeing to meet him at a restaurant.

Manny didn’t turn up and instead followed Jotham to his hotel room where he beat him before he drew a knife on him and said: “This is for my son.”

However, at the last moment, Manny could not kill him and instead broke down in tears.

At the end of the episode, Manny tearfully apologised for everything that happened.

He said: “All of this, it’s my fault. The money, this house, it’s my fault. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I was wrong, it was a mistake.”

In the final few moments, Isaac forgave him and they embraced each other while Sam corrected him and said: “We were wrong.”

Isaac’s chaperone Cheryl (Rebecca Front) came round to the house and revealed that former workers and abused actors were coming forward break their NDAs and build a court case against Jotham.

Right at the end of the finale, it is revealed that Isaac is going to give evidence in the court hearing against Jotham with both of his parents accompanying him.
