Danny Rose to follow Kieran Trippier out of Tottenham as Mauricio Pochettino backs exit

Ever since the England international full-back went public with his criticisms of the pay structure at the club on the eve of last season, there has been a question-mark over his long-term future at the club.

He watched while his uncle and agent Mark Rankine arranged Kyle Walker’s money-spinning transfer to Manchester City and now Kieran Trippier seems closer to boosting his wages with a £20m move to Atletico Madrid, Rose is once again getting itchy feet.

Despite airing his discontent in a national newspaper interview at the start of the last campaign, the 29-year-old has kept up a tight relationship with Pochettino and was one of the players instrumental in getting Tottenham to the Champions League final last season.

But amid the euphoria of Tottenham’s on-the-field success, he has never lost sight of the fact that the Tottenham pay structure continues to lag behind that of their Premier League rivals.

Even the move into an state-of-the-art new stadium could not persuade him, and towards the end of last season he rather pointedly talked about the duty of “the people upstairs”.

“It is not just the foundations that attract players, or make players want to stay, or want to stay,” Rose said. “We just have to trust that the people upstairs are going to do whatever they see fit to make that next step.”

Rose is on around £65,000-a-week and is under contract until 2021 and Tottenham will expect their £25m valuation to be met as they are in no particular rush to sell.

At the same time, they know that the defender is thick-skinned enough to report back for first team duty if no buyer is found by the time the rest of the squad are done competing for the International Champions Cup, which gets underway against Juventus in Singapore on Sunday.
