Hurricane Barry NOAA 10am update: Barry becomes hurricane as it looms on Louisiana

Hurricane Barry is heading into the southeastern US from the Atlantic Ocean. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the US, the system will make landfall in the next few hours. Barry is expected to touch down in the southeast at the Louisiana coast, bringing with it damaging wind and rain. The storm could wreak havoc in New Orleans, which has seen flash floods since July 9.

The latest advisory from the NOAA National Hurricane Centre (NHC) warned the storm will make landfall today. 

The storm will touch down on the state with sustained winds of 75mph. 

The advisory came in at 10am CDT (4pm BST) and reads: “Barry is moving toward the northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h), and a turn toward the north-northwest is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the north on Sunday.

“On the forecast track, the centre of Barry will move through southern Louisiana today, into central Louisiana tonight, and into northern Louisiana on Sunday.”

“Maximum sustained winds are now near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts.

“As it moves inland, Barry is forecast to weaken below hurricane strength in the next few hours, and it is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression on Sunday.

“Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) to the east of the centre and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km) from the centre.

“The National Ocean Service station at Eugene Island, Louisiana recently reported sustained winds of 62 mph and a wind gust of 82 mph.”

According to the NHC, these are the latest changes with the 10am advisory: 

– Tropical Storm Warning issued for the Louisiana coast from Cameron to Sabine Pass.

– Hurricane Watch for the Louisiana coast east of Grand Isle discontinued.

– Tropical Storm Watch for the Mississippi coast discontinued.

Hurricane Barry is expected to unleash massive amounts of rain on Louisiana, alongside heavy winds and storm surges at sea.
