Spain weather forecast: Madrid under ‘high risk’ heat alert – how hot will it get?

A blistering-hot heatwave has spiked temperatures to almost unbearable levels across southern European countries including Spain, Greece and Turkey. Madrid today activated its “high risk” alert for heat for the fifth day running. The orange alert issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) was issued in anticipation of the mercury rocketing to 40.3C. According to BBC Weather, the heat has currently reached 39C in Madrid already.

The current heatwave is the second one to hit the region this summer.

Today’s orange alert is valid for the Metropolitan area and Henares, South, Vegas and West area between 2pm and 8pm local time today.

Although conditions will be cooler in mountainous regions, temperatures could still climb to 37 degrees.

People are being urged to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and to stay out of the sun.

The recommended drinking levels are two litres of water per person.

The warning says: “Be prepared. Take precautions and keep up to date with the latest weather forecast.

“Expect some disruption to daily routines and be prepared for disruption to outdoor activities.”

Another baking day is forecast for Saturday but then the mercury will drop to 26C giving people a much-needed break from the roasting temperatures.

What about the rest of Europe?

While Spain is sizzling, there have been thunderstorms and torrential downpours in northern Europe today.

BBC meteorologist Sarah Keith-Lucas said: “Through the day on Friday parts of eastern France, Switzerland and Germany still seeing some heavy showers and thunderstorms.

“Towards the southwest, it is pretty warm for Portugal and for Spain as well.

“Still a few heavy showers cropping up across central Italy – temperatures on the hot side across parts of Spain.

Some heavy showers across eastern parts of France, Switzerland, the Netherlands in towards Denmark as well.

“Fairly unsettled and showery across Scandinavia.”

The showers and thunderstorms are expected to move further east into Poland and Romania over the weekend.
