Twitter down: Is Twitter down? Why did Twitter stop working?

Twitter has been playing up for some, with 14,932 reports on website DownDetector. The website shows an error message when users try to log on saying: “Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing—we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.” It appears the errors have now rectified themselves, with users back online.

Whilst on the app, users had been getting a blank screen with the message: “Tweets aren’t loading right now. Please tap to retry.”

Users took to website Down Detector, hoping for more information as to why the social media platform was not working.

One said: “is it just me whos getting errors and cant log in?/? im confused?”

Another added: “I thought it was just me for a minute. Is anyone else getting an error page with a robot on it?”

A third said: “I thought I’d lost you all. I was actually devastated. I logged out to see if that did anything and now I can’t get back in”.

DownDetector reports that people started reporting issues at 7.46pm BST, with 39 percent coming from the website, 34 percent from the iOS app and 25 percent from Android.

Twitter’s status page acknowledged there was a service disruption.

The explanation for the outage was: “due to an internal configuration change, which we’re now fixing.

“Some people may be able to access Twitter again and we’re working to make sure Twitter is available to everyone as quickly as possible.”

“We will keep you updated on whats happening.”

Facebook, Instagram and other popular social media websites appeared to be working at the time Twitter went down on Thursday evening.

Earlier today, Reddit was experiencing outages on its website and app, however, appeared to be back working for most users approximately an hour before Twitter went down, according to DownDetector.

Down Detector’s map showed users around the world were having issues accessing the website or app.

Now, however, Twitter has rectified the problem, saying on their status website: “Twitter APIs should now be operating as expected, we are continuing to monitor.”

The social media giant also tweeted: “Miss us?” shortly after the website began working again.

This amused Twitter users no end, with more than 18,000 likes, 6,000 retweets and 9,000 replies from grateful accounts.
