eBay: ‘Highly rare’ Peter Rabbit 50p coin selling for £5000 – bidders must beware

The bidding site, eBay, is often updated with new coins for collectors to get their hands on. Although many of these are put on sale for a reasonable price, some of these are uploaded for much more than face value. One eBay user posted a 2016 Peter Rabbit coin with the asking price of £5000. The coin is described as “highly rare” but this is not necessarily the case and bidders should be careful before making a purchase.

The seller, “welshsufi2011” uploaded two photos of the coin and explained the huge Buy It Now price.

They wrote: “This is a rare Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit 50p coin. Some wear as expected.

“Circulated in 2016 and are highly rare and collectible, hence starting price.”

Despite setting the price so high, they did reveal they are open to offers.

The coin on sale was from the first lot of Beatrix Potter coins, released in 2016 to mark the 150th anniversary of the author’s birth.

New versions of the coins have been released each year and are of great interest to many people.

The coin website, Change Checker said: “’The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ was the first of Beatrix Potter’s tales and the mischievous character has been captured on a 50p coin.

“Designed by Emma Noble, Peter Rabbit is instantly recognisable in the centre of the coin.”

The website also give the coin a huge mintage of 9,700,000.

They have ranked it as “one” on the Scarcity Index, which means it is actually common.

On top of that, the same coin can be bought online for just £9.

Those interested in purchasing the fifty pence piece could save money by shopping around.

The coin on offer is not the only one selling for a highly marked up price.

Recently, another Peter Rabbit coin was uploaded onto eBay for £920.

A third Peter Rabbit coin from the 2017 collection was put up for £8999.

The seller described it as being in very good condition.
