Gentleman Jack: 'I'm in floods' Viewers in tears as 'powerful' series comes to an end

Series one of Gentleman Jack came to end this evening as viewers watched Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones) and Ann Lister (Sophie Rundle) run away together to be married.

The two lovers who have had a turbulent relationship so far declared their love for another and rode off into the sunset together.

Viewers watching at home were quick to praise the show and some revealed the final scenes had left them in tears.

One said: “I will never get over how beautiful this is. To see two women unashamedly in love on prime time British television, I need a minute to stop crying, thank you #GentlemanJack.”

“Omg! #GentlemanJack ! I’m in tears…. again! What an amazing series, the cast, the music, the costumes, the settings! #SuranneJones was born to play #AnneLister! In fact, she probably was her in a previous life lol. Thank you @BBCOne Thank you #SallyWainwright Loved every second,” wrote a second.

“I’m all emotional now. What a wonderful series this has been and I’m so glad it’s coming back for another series. Loved everything about the scene with Anne and Ann on the hillside; such beautiful cinematography. I’ve got such a soft spot for York as well. #GentlemanJack,” added another.

A fourth remarked: “I’m not crying, you’re crying. #GentlemanJack .”

Another tweeted: “I’m in floods of tears. That was so beautiful. I don’t want the series to send #GentlemanJack.”

“Happy tears right now, such a powerful and profound series. My goodness it’s moving, it’s everything  #loveislove #gentlemanjack,” declared a sixth.

After the success of the first series Gentleman Jack scored a renewal back in May, a month after it debuted in America on HBO.

Discussing the recommission, Sally Wainwright, who wrote the series, said: “It’s so exciting that so many people have had such a positive response to Suranne’s exuberant performance as the brilliant, life-affirming Anne Lister and to Sophie’s beautiful performance as her courageous partner, Ann Walker.

“I’m utterly delighted that we’ve been recommissioned, because there are so many more big, bold stories to tell about Anne Lister and Ann Walker. 

“A massive thank you to the BBC and HBO and to everyone at Lookout Point.”

Gentleman Jack star Suranne revealed she was “thrilled” their would be a second series. 

She added: “I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey.

“It’s such amazing and positive news. I love working with the brilliant and talented Sophie Rundle and can’t wait to create some more Lister and Walker moments with her too.”

Once tonight’s finale had come to an end, excited fans shared how pleased they were at the news of a second series

One said: “Can’t wait for series 2 . I will wear black until it returns #GentlemanJack.”

Another added: “Words can not explain how much I enjoyed #GentlemanJack what a beautiful ending with the stunning York minister in the back ground superb cast  so can not wait for series 2.”

“Gentleman Jack is literally the best TV show I’ve watched in a long time. Glad there’s a series 2. #GentlemanJack,” wrote a third.
