Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger won’t like what Ray Parlour has said – ‘He was awful’

Parlour played under Wenger for almost eight years between 1996 and 2004.

In fact only five other players made more Premier League appearances for Arsenal during Wenger’s time at the club.

So not many people know the Frenchman more than Parlour, who was part of all three of the Gunners’ Premier League title wins to date.

Wenger had a meagre playing career, with the highest level he reached being the French top division where he made only a few appearances for Strasbourg towards the end of the 1970s as well as being the club’s reserve team coach.

Parlour has revealed how his former boss used to join in with some training sessions.

However, he said no one wanted him on their team as he was significantly worse than anyone else.

“He wasn’t a player,” Parlour said on talkSPORT.

“Everybody expects someone to be half decent when they’re managers, got an eye for a ball, but he was awful.

“He tried to join in sometimes and you know in a playground when you don’t want to pick someone and the same person is always last, he would always be the last person picked.

“We wanted to win that game and if he was on our team we were always less favourites to win the game.

“He was a character, though, Arsene Wenger.

“He was such a funny character and he always laughed at himself.

“When he made a big mistake he didn’t take it to heart.

“If we started giggling, he would sort of laugh as well.

“He was never a football player but what a great manager he was to play under.”
