WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season 3

The Handmaid’s Tale season three, episode eight follows on from the ending of the last episode, which saw the handmaids hang Martha Frances (played by Ordena Stephens).

The trailer opens on a dramatic shot of June Obsorne (Elisabeth Moss) under her red umbrella.

“And Hannah my daughter is gone because of her,” she says as we cut to an image of a terrified Ofmathew (Ashleigh LaThrop).

Viewers will remember in the previous episode seven, Under His Eye, Ofmathew told Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) she had heard the Martha helping June to see her daughter.

This led to a dramatic ending where the handmaids were forced to pull the rope and hang Martha Frances as her punishment.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE HANDMAID’S TALE SEASON THREE, EPISODE SEVEN?

Aunt Lydia told the handmaids the Martha’s crime was trying to reunite Hannah with her birth mother June.

The clip then cuts to the handmaids attending to one of their own who is in labour as another handmaid bashes past Ofmathew.

“Tell your friends to cool it,” Aunt Lydia tells June to which she responds “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The promo also hints Aunt Lydia’s backstory will finally be revealed in the next episode.

The trailer cuts to an image of her dancing at a concert before Gilead was founded.

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF THE HANDMAID’S TALE?

Back in the present day, we see the handmaids sitting in a circle around June and accusing her of being responsible for the hanging.

“And who’s fault is it that the Martha died?,” Aunt Lydia asks as the handmaids chant “her fault” and “sinner” at June.

There is also a glimpse that one of the handmaids will be taking a stand in this episode as a soldier lies dead in the grocery shop while she dances around him.

Later in the clip, Aunt Lydia tells June: “Don’t be a cry baby.”

The promo ends on Aunt Lydia smashing a mirror with her bare hands in an apparent flashback.

Fans will be eager for more as we finally learn more about the enigmatic character of Aunt Lydia and what caused her to become the woman she is today.

Viewers have seen glimpses of her past as a teacher in previous episodes but this may finally be a deep dive into the character.

In an interview with io9, Aunt Lydia actor Ann Dowd said about the scenes: “It’s not her whole past, but it is part of it that is very significant. I thought it was beautifully written.

“Loved the choices and it easily, this is what was so extraordinary, lined up so well with my understanding of her.

“I don’t know how that happens but it [did], and it was a beautiful experience.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 8 airs Wednesday, July 10 on Hulu.
