Man Utd told the two reasons they must sign Harry Maguire instead of Toby Alderweireld

That is according to Liverpool legend and ESPN FC pundit Steve Nicol.

Both Maguire and Alderweireld are linked with summer moves to Manchester United.

United had a £70million bid turned down for Maguire this week, with Leicester wanting more than the world-record fee for a defender of £75m that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham contract-rebel Alderweireld is available for as little a third of Maguire’s price.

The Belgium international has just one year remaining on his deal with the north London club.

However, he has a clause which means he can be bought for just £25m up until two weeks before the close of this summer’s transfer window.

But Nicol believes Maguire would be a wiser signing for United due to the fact he is four years younger than 30-year-old Alderweireld.

And the pundit says he has not been impressed with Alderweireld’s performances for Tottenham in the last two seasons anyway.

“Well Alderweireld’s 30,” Nicol said.

“Actually for me, the last 18 months, he hasn’t been particularly great.

“Harry Maguire, Manchester United will know exactly what they’re going to get.

“Plus the fact he’s four years younger.

“So from that point of view, it makes sense.

“I still think he’s overpriced, but at the end of the day you’ve got to pay the going rate and that’s what it is.”
