Man Utd may want Leicester star Harry Maguire because of three players

Manchester United want Leicester star Maguire, a whole year after Ed Woodward deemed the England international to be too expensive.

The England international would prefer to join Manchester City to play under Pep Guardiola instead – but is believed to still be open to a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are finding, though, that transfer windows nowadays are a lot more trickier than they used to be.

Gone are the days where they could put the money on the table and teams would roll over. Leicester certainly aren’t going to do that.

But United want Maguire and it’s easy to see why. Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo have all endured contrasting fortune during their time at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal brought Rojo to the Premier League in 2014 convinced he had the ideal Rio Ferdinand replacement.

Ferdinand, and fellow United legend Nemanja Vidic, had left the club that summer.

And Van Gaal was convinced Rojo, who had flourished for Argentina at the World Cup, would be the perfect replacement.

Except he hasn’t been.

Sure, there have been times where he looks the part. He was magnificent as United won both the EFL Cup and Europa League in 2017.

But, with all due respect, that appears to be his level. A Europa League player. That’s not want United want or need.

Jose Mourinho then brought in Eric Bailly when he took charge.

Bailly, like Rojo, impressed in 2017. Together, they looked a key defensive axis.

But the Ivory Coast international has been plagued by injuries in recent times. And there’s talk he may even be sold with Arsenal monitoring his situation.

Lindelof appears to be the one defensive success story at this moment in time.

The Sweden international signed from Benfica in 2017 and initially struggled. The Premier League and all its challenges looked too big for him.

But Lindelof kicked on last term and is one of just a few players guaranteed to start almost every match.

Will Maguire be next to him? That remains to be seen.

But the failures of other United defenders in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson is exactly why the club want him so badly.
