BBC News: ‘Don't know why I said that' Charlie Stayt stuns co-host as he ends interview

Charlie, 57, and Naga, 44, were back on the iconic BBC Breakfast sofa this morning making sure viewers were up to date with all of the latest headlines.

The pair had just finished speaking with political correspondent Chris Mason regarding the news surrounding the Conservative leadership contest, when Charlie surprised Naga.

Usually with political reports and hard hitting news, the BBC presenters take on a more formal stance when speaking with guests or reporters.

However, this morning was slightly different as Charlie was more informal with Chris.

Instead of ending the link by telling Chris, “We’ll speak to you later,” as usual, he added: “Bye, bye.”

Naga and Chris instantly burst out laughing as they hadn’t expected Charlie’s more informal goodbye.

Quickly realising what he had said, he remarked: “I don’t know why I said that, really.

“Sorry, that was rather informal, wasn’t it?”

Making the politics correspondent giggle even more, Charlie continued: “Here we go, lets get a little wave in there as well, why not.”

Meanwhile, Naga took a cheeky swipe at Charlie as she went more a much more formal farewell.

“Take care sir. Do have a top of the day. Toodle pip,” she remarked.

Explaining the unusual end to the report, Charlie said: “Sometimes it’s nice to do that, isn’t it?

“I mean we’re very fond of one another and I’m just putting it out there we go.”

Charlie went on to assure viewers: “We’re not always going to do that every time.

“It’s just something we introduce once in a while for no particular reason.”

On yesterday’s programme, Charlie was the focus of some more mischief as weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, 57, was joined by a guest during her report from Wimbledon.

Carol was due to present the weather forecast, but was interrupted by puppet star Hacker T Dog, who made quite the cameo.

Speaking to the presenters in the studio, Hacker quipped: “Hey Charlie, he’s a right Stayt. Whoops, it never gets old does it.”

Shocked by the remark, Carol said: “That is terrible. You can’t say that about Charlie, even though it is his surname.”

As the guest continued to pick fun at her colleagues, Carol replied: “Oh Hacker. Honestly, he’s nothing but trouble this dog.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
