Donald Tusk admits 'personal struggle' to keep the EU together during Brexit

The europhile and former prime minister of Poland confessed that during the Brexit process it had been a “struggle” to maintain unity among those within the European Union. Reflecting on his time as European Council President, Mr Tusk told MEPs: “I have personally struggled to maintain unity in the past years, whether on solidarity with Ukraine, assistance to Greece, immigration crisis or the Brexit talks.

After three days of manic negotiations in Brussels, EU leaders concluded their top jobs packages, which also saw the first woman nominated as European Commission President.

The Belgian politician is scheduled to assume the office on December 1, 2019.

Charles Yves Jean Ghislaine Michel is the current interim Prime Minister of Belgium and President-elect of the European Council.

After Mr Michel succeeds Donald Tusk as European Council president in December, he will be in charge of organising and chairing the summits of EU leaders that constitute the highest level of European political decision-making.

“We come here to take note that once again the British are telling us what they don’t want, but, good grief, could they tell us finally what they do want.”

Mr Michel also declared earlier this year that no deal would be better than a bad deal for the EU.

He added: “At least it would be clearer”.
