California earthquake today: Where was 6.4 magnitude earthquake just now?

A large earthquake has rattled Southern California, striking fear into the hearts of residents awaiting the “big one”.

United States Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 7.5 miles southwest of Searles Valley in California at 6.33pm BST (10.33am local time) and 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest city where 27,000 people live.

The huge quake was felt by people in Los Angeles 121 miles away and also in parts of neighbouring state Nevada, including Las Vegas.

Film director Ava DuVernay wrote on Twitter: “Been living in Los Angeles all my life. That was the longest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. Not jerky. Smooth and rolling. But it was loooong.

“It was so long I thought for the first time ever “Is this the big one?” Damn. Respect Mother Nature. She’s the boss.”

USGS said the quake was very shallow at 5.4 miles which amplified its effects.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
