Piers Morgan: GMB host slammed for Women's World Cup Rapinoe tweet ahead of semi-final

Ahead of England’s semi-final match against the US on Tuesday night, Piers had put out a tweet attacking America’s star player, Megan Rapinoe. Following her goal in the quarter-final, Piers labelled the midfielder as having a “stupendous ego”. Ahead of the crunch match, Piers once again attacked the player while pledging his support for the Lionesses.

In a tweet before the match, Piers said: “Rapinoe benched.

“She’s bottled it.”

Unfortunately for Piers, England lost 2-1 which opened up a wave of attacks towards the ITV man on Twitter.

One user on Twitter said: “Always a good day when you know Piers Morgan is disappointed.”

Another wrote: “It brings me so much joy to know that Piers Morgan is absolutely miserable.”

Despite England coming into the game in great form, the Lionesses could not get past a team that was regarded as the favourite to win the tournament.

Not helping their cause, Phil Neville’s team missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed.

Although he was heavily criticised on Twitter, Piers was gracious following the game.

Tweeting afterwards, the ITV man said: “All over. Beaten by the better team.

“Good effort Lionesses but sadly not good enough.

“Well played USA.”

Away from Piers’ tweets ahead of the game, there had been plenty of controversy in the build-up as Neville accused the US of poor “etiquette” after some US staff were caught in England’s hotel.

In another moment of Twitter controversy Piers, 54, took on LGBTQ activist and US Army veteran Charlotte Clymer earlier on Tuesday after she called him out for failing to step up to the plate with a bet on the England vs USA Women’s World Cup semi-final.

Replying to a Twitter user who asked if Piers ever “put his money where his mouth is”, Charlotte told her 220,000 followers: “Nope, Piers Morgan was too scared to place a bet for charity on this match.”

Clearly spotting the mocking in his mentions, the Good Morning Britain presenter promptly retweeted the post, adding in view of his own 6.6 million followers: “How much do you want to bet?”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
