Sky TV and Virgin Media bonus as customers set for 4K treat this month

Sky and Virgin Media customers are getting extra 4K treats this month with both firms revealing more pin-sharp content is being beamed into homes.

The TV and broadband rivals have both got new shows, movies and sporting events being broadcast in this ultimate format which offers four times the resolution of standard HD.

Perhaps the most exciting news comes to tennis fans with Virgin confirming that it will be showing all of the big matches on Centre Court at Wimbledon in 4K Ultra HD.

To make things even better, customers with compatible TVs will also be able to view the action from South West London in HDR (High Dynamic Range).

David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, said: “It’s been a great summer for tennis fans on our TV platform with Roland Garros in 4K HDR last month and now Wimbledon. Our customers will once more feel like they’re courtside with every smash and volley in the best picture quality possible, all from the comfort of their home. Virgin TV really is the best way to watch the best of this summer’s sport.”

Virgin says that customers will also be able to watch every match at Wimbledon in HD for the first time by pressing the red button on their remote.

So, that’s the good news for Virgin users but there’s also plenty of extra content coming to Sky fans.

As long as you have a Sky Q 2TB set-top box you’ll be able to watch a swathe of shows in the ultimate quality including A Star is Born, Edge of Tomorrow and the British Grand Prix live from Silverstone.

Here’s the full list of Sky entertainment coming in 4K.

The news of this 4K boost comes as Virgin Media has just announced some less thrilling news.

The firm has revealed that it will be putting up prices in the coming months with some customers facing an increase of £4.50 per month.

Virgin says that the hike will be added to bills from September with users being informed how they will be affected.

Speaking about the update a Virgin Media spokesperson said: “Changing prices is not a decision we take lightly. We invest more than £1billion a year in our network and services to keep giving our customers great value.

“We are committed to giving our customers an incredible service with unrivalled connectivity, great, high-quality programming and innovative new upgrades – and our customers can expect much more to come.”
