Ivanka Trump: Why was Ivanka Trump at G20? Why is there controversy over Ivanka attending?

Ivanka and Donald Trump attended the G20 summit this year on behalf of the US, alongside representatives from 18 other countries and the European Union. While there, leaders bridged a selection of topics, including global economy, trade and investment and women’s empowerment. Mrs Trump’s appearance was unwelcome to many people, who cited her lack of qualification as a diplomat.

Why was Ivanka Trump at G20?

Donald Trump trusts his eldest daughter as one of his most valuable advisors.

Born from Mr Trump’s first marriage to Ivana Marie Zelníčková, she was enlisted to the Executive Office of the President of the United States (EOP) when he took office in 2017.

From this position she regularly accompanies her father to international events, however, she is criticised for her lack of experience in politics or international relations.

During her time at the event, she was seen attempting to mingle with world leaders.

One video saw her trying to wedge herself into a discussion between Theresa May, French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and IMF chairwoman Christine Lagarde.

The video immediately went viral and sparked the Twitter hashtag #Unwantedivanka.

US politicians were critical of Ivanka Trump’s presence, including eminent Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

She said via Twitter: “It may be shocking to some, but being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification.

“It hurts our diplomatic standing when the President phones it in & the world moves on.

“The US needs our President working the G20.

“Bringing a qualified diplomat couldn’t hurt either.”

Before her time as an advisor to Mr Trump, Ivanka oversaw acquisitions in the Trump Organisation and founded a lifestyle brand.

According to the White House, in her current position, she focusses on the “education and economic empowerment of women and their families”.

Most of her positions were afforded to her by Donald Trump, who financed her entrepreneurship and provided her with company positions.

Many people argue she should not have a high-security clearance within the White House simply because of her father.
