Countryfile: ‘Amazing’ Viewers in awe as Anita Rani visits ‘inspiring’ Welsh town

This evening’s episode of Countryfile saw a “Caring for Out Planet” compilation air.

Anita Rani visited Machynlleth on the BBC show, the first town in Wales to declare a climate emergency.

Situated in the Dyfi UNESCO Biosphere Reserve the town has committed itself to becoming carbon zero by 2050.

The BBC presenter visited a water-powered cliff railway at at the Centre for Alternative Technology and she also explored the latest designs in solar heating.

She also went to a repair shop, a space where townsfolk could bring broken items to be mended instead of thrown away.

Many viewers were delighted to see the efforts the town had gone to in order to combat climate change.

Those watching at home took to Twitter to comment on the programme.

“Well done Machynlleth I’m moving. #countryfile #climateemergency,” one shared.

Another exclaimed: “@itsanitarani How did you enjoy centre for alternative technology at Machynlleth? Think it’s a great inspiring place! #countryfile.”

“Amazing to hear about #Machynlleth, the first town in Wales to declare a climate emergency. #Trailblazers #Countryfile,” a third commented.

“#Countryfile I can’t get over how inspiring this town is. Such lovely, caring people as well,” a fourth added.

While many were delighted with the segment, there was some debate about the pronunciation of the town’s name.

“Anita Rani’s pronunciation of Machynlleth #countryfile,” one wrote.

A second said: “The presenter on #countryfile needs instruction on how to say Machynlleth. I wish the @bbc would put in more effort. And I’m not even Welsh.”

“Ah, Machynlleth. Possibly more difficult for bbc presenters to pronounce than that Icelandic volcano… #countryfile Anita is not doing too badly… ish…” a third chimed in.

Elsewhere, Helen Skelton met with a team who work on an eco project called Tŷ Solar, which translates from Welsh to Solar House.

She toured a brand new house which had been built in an affordable and eco-friendly style.

Ellie Harrison was also featured in the episode where she ventured to Heartwood Forest.

It was a return visit for the presenter who had first been to the site in 2011 where she helped introduce trees to the area.

Countryfile continues Sundays on BBC One.
