Donald Trump to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at border later today

The meeting comes after Trump tweeted an invitation to the North Korean leader during the G20 Summit. South Korean President Moon Jae-in confirmed Kim had accepted the invitation. The US President asked Kim via Twitter to “say hello” and “shake his hand” at the border in an attempt to resolve the ongoing dispute over the rogue nation’s nuclear weapons programme.

Mr Moon said the leaders would meet at the so-called truce village of Panmunjom inside the border zone, according to the BBC.

Trump told the press conference that him and Kim had “developed a very good relationship” and were looking forward to meeting.

There is a possibility that Trump will cross the border and become the first US President to ever set foot in North Korea.

Mr Moon praised Trump and Kim for “being so brave”.

He said: “I hope President Trump will go down in history as the president who achieves peace on Korean Peninsula.”

Trump has said he has “no problem” with crossing into North Korea.

Today during a meeting with business leaders in Seoul, South Korea he said: “I understand they want to meet and I’d love to say hello.”

He said the meeting could be “very short, virtually a handshake but that’s okay, a handshake means a lot”.

He then added: “Let’s see what happens. They’re trying to work it out.”

Trump arrived in South Korea on Saturday evening after meeting with various world leaders at the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan.

After having dinner with Mr Moon, Trump tweeted that he and Mr Moon had “toasted” their new trade deal.

He described the deal as a “far better one for us than that which it replaced”.
