Google Maps receives an important new feature but UK fans will be disappointed

Google Maps is the American tech giant’s navigation software that is used by millions of people across the globe.

The programme is available on desktops in addition to Android and iOS devices, making it vastly accessible.

Google regularly bolsters Maps’ suite of functionality with new updates.

The latest of which will provide users with alerts if they are in a taxi that goes off-route by more than 0.5 kilometres.

In a blog post, Google announced the fresh functionality is called “Stay Safer” and can be activated within the software.

The idea behind the tool appears set to eliminate worry when taking a taxi.

If the user is in a vehicle that goes off-route, they will receive a notification alerting them to the fact.

This can then be shared with friends and family so they are aware of the situation.

Others are also able to keep track of a user’s journey if it has been shared with them.

Unfortunately, the new feature is currently only available in India, meaning UK fans are missing out and will surely be disappointed.

Announcing Stay Safer, Google said: “Today, we’re excited to announce a new feature – Stay Safer – for passengers like Smita, traveling in taxis and auto-rickshaws, to give them peace of mind, or avoid being taken through a longer route.

“Now, after searching for your destination and getting directions, you can enable this experience by selecting the ‘Stay safer’ and ‘Get off-route alerts’ option.

“If your driver deviates more than 0.5 kilometres from the Google Maps suggested route, your phone will buzz with a prominent notification, and you can tap it to see where you are compared to the original route.

“Then, you can also choose to share your live trip with friends and family directly from that screen so they know you are off route and can keep track of your journey, and take appropriate action, if required.”

It is unclear if the Stay Safer tool will arrive in regions outside of India.
