Netflix Brexit boost: Streaming giant hunts for bigger London HQ in show of confidence

The streaming service is looking to more than double its office space and wants a headquarters with at least 50,000 sq ft, according to The Times. Its current site in Oxford Circus is 20,000 sq ft. Netflix has boosted its UK presence in the past year and has made 40 productions involving more than 25,000 cast and crew extras. The company has also expressed interest in ploughing money into a British production studio, but solid plans have yet to be announced.

Netflix has been contacted for comment by Express.co.uk.

The news from Netflix mars the latest global technology business to signal its intention to stay close to Britain despite Brexit uncertainty.

Facebook, Apple, Google and WhatsApp have also either committed to new and larger headquarters in London, or have planned a recruitment drive, since the Brexit vote in 2016.

In July last year, Facebook said it would double its office space by moving to King’s Cross.

While Apple has revealed plans to create a new London headquarters at Battersea Power Station.

At the same time, Google has begun work on a £1billion campus, also in King’s Cross.

WhatsApp has selected the capital as the home for its new payments hub, which will see the creation of 100 new jobs.

Netflix was founded in 1997 and to date has 148 million paid memberships in over 190 countries.

The company confirmed last month it was hiking the prices of some of its subscription packages for UK customers.

The standard deal, where customers can use Netflix on two screens at the same time, went up to £8.99 a month, an increase of £1.

The premium package, which allows viewing on up to four screens, now costs £2 extra a month, bringing its total fee to £11.99.

Basic packages, where users can watch on one screen at a time and no HD, stayed the same price, at £5.99.
