Game of Thrones has announced a prequel series in the works with HBO and George R.R. Martin on board. Here’s everything we know so far about the project now that it has begun filming in Northern Ireland.

Has filming begun on Game of Thrones prequel?

Filming has begun on the first of the Game of Thrones prequel series.

The HBO show, which is set thousands of years before the main season, has been spotted filming in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland is one of most popular filming locations across the series, having been the setting of Winterfell and Castle Ward.

The show is being filmed in a remote location in County Down on the north coast of Northern Ireland, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The newspaper also reported that various sites in the county were also being prepared for filming, including Titanic Studios in Belfast.

Filming is underway for the pilot episode of the show, which is hoped to be picked up for a full season.

The first prequel has the reported working title of Bloodmoon, according to Screen Rant but this could change later on.

There’s very little known about the direction of the latest project but HBO did say it will be set thousands of years in the past.

On its website, HBO said: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

“From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”

The show will star Hollywood actor Watts alongside Good Omens’ Richardson, Poldark’s Josh Whitehouse and Twilight’s Jamie Campbell Bower.

Naomi Ackie, who will soon be seen in Star Wars: Episode IX, will also star in the new show alongside Doctor Who actor John Simm.

The prequel is being developed by author George R.R. Martin and showrunner Jane Goldman.

Watts spoke recently to the Associated Press about her role in the new series.

She said: “It is intimidating. It’s very exciting. And yes, having just come off the last series, where the world was blowing up over it.”

She also added that she is feeling the pressure to please the fans of the fantasy show.

Watts said: “Hopefully, those fans come along and get to find something new and interesting in this world as well.

“I think they won’t be let down, it’s a great team of people they’ve put together.”

Game of Thrones recently came to an end after eight seasons of the fantasy hit series.

Fans were finally able to see who sits on the Iron Thrones at the end of a dramatic final series.
