‘Iran-backed Yemeni forces’ unleash horror drone attack on Saudi airport killing Syrian

The vicious drone strike was claimed by the Saudi government on Twitter. They confirmed a Syrian resident had died after sustaining wounds from the alleged missile attack. Houthi-run Al Masirah TV said Yemen’s Houthi movement had targeted Abha and Jizan airports in the south of the country with drones.

In a statement, the Saudi-led coalition group, who is battling the Houthis in Yemen, said: “A terrorist attack by the Iran-backed Houthi militia targeted Abha airport, killing a Syrian resident and wounding seven civilians.”

However, the government stopped at confirming the attack on Jizan airport.

Local reports suggest that a suspected drone struck Abha airport’s car park on Sunday night.

The area is around 125 miles (200km) north of the Yemen border.

The airport serves domestic and regional flights and routes.

Saudi state TV confirmed that flights had since resumed at the airport, with operations now running normally.

A similar attack was carried out at the airport earlier in June.

On that occasion 26 people were wounded by the Houthi missile strike.

The Western-backed Sunni Muslim coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intervened in Yemen in 2015 to try to restore the internationally recognized government.

That government had been ousted from power in Sanaa by the Houthis in late 2014.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and US all raised their concerns over the escalation of violence in Houthi attacks.

In a joint statement, the countries said: “We express full support for Saudi Arabia and call for an immediate end to such attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthis.”
