Jake Gyllenhaal sister: How Jake and Maggie escaped a devastating California fire

Maggie, 41, and Jake, 38, are native New Yorkers who moved to LA when they were teenagers. In 2006, the siblings were on holiday with their family in the San Francisco Bay area, staying at the Manka’s Inverness Lodge. They had often stayed at the historic lodge, which was popular with A-listers like Prince Charles and Frances McDormand.

But during a massive windstorm, a tree crashed into the hotel around 2am, prompting a huge fire to break out.

Eight people were believed to have been upstairs in the lodge when the fire broke out, while others were staying in cabins scattered throughout the property.

Luckily, no-one was hurt, and that might be partly thanks to Jake.

Daniel DeLong, a chef and co-owner of the lodge, said: “Jake was helping me pull things out of the fire.”

Speaking about the outbreak of the fire, he said: “It was during a very high windstorm and a tree came down.

“The cause of the actual fire has not been determined at this point, but it totally destroyed the lodge.”

Linda Feldman, a visitor from Seattle who was staying in a next-door annexe, said: “We went outside and then we saw the main building totally engulfed in flames.

“It was huge. Flames were coming out the windows.”

Some treasures were lost, including pieces of furniture by Gustav Stickley, the early 20th century Arts and Crafts designer; photographs by Dorothea Lange; and a 17th-century Parisian pharmacy cabinet.

But the owners, determined to rebuild, salvaged what they could of the property and bought a nearby venue for a new restaurant, Sir & Star.

But now, Jake is in London promoting his new film, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

He was spotted with co-star Tom Holland outside BBC Radio 2, stopping to greet fans who waited for them behind a barrier.

Jake looked stylish in some grey trousers and a light summer jacket which he layered over a black T-shirt.

And Jake is also returning to London’s West End for the first time in 18 years.

He will reprise his role as Georges in Sunday in the Park with George alongside Annaleigh Ashford as Dot/Marie, which was a hit on Broadway in New York in 2017.

He last performed in London’s theatre district in 2002, in Kenneth Lonergan’s play This Is Our Youth.

Jake will appear on the Graham Norton Show on BBC1 at 10.35pm on Friday, June 21.
