GTA 6 release update: Great news for Grand Theft Auto PlayStation and Xbox gamers

Parent company Take-Two Interactive has revealed that they are looking to speed up future video game releases, which can only mean good things for the GTA 6 release date.

Rockstar Games has yet to announce anything on their next major project and are still focused in 2019 on Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA Online.

But recent rumours suggest that GTA 6 will be released on the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

These are coming in 2020 and will probably mean that the next Grand Theft Auto game will not be on PS4 and Xbox One.

The idea of a cross-generational title will be tempting for Rockstar Games, especially considering the millions of current-gen consoles providing a massive install base.

But from what has been shared by various reports so far, is that Rockstar is putting together an ambitious new game that sounds too big for the PS4 and Xbox One to handle.

So if 2020 is the earliest we could see a new Grand Theft Auto game launched, how likely is it that it will appear?

While Rockstar Games aren’t offering any big updates concerning GTA 6, Take-Two has provided an update concerning the company’s future launch strategy.

And this includes the news that Take-Two and its development teams want to see release schedules shrink, rather than expand further.

Speaking to GameIndustry.biz, CEO Strauss Zelnick touched upon the idea, while also discussing how the longevity of specific titles have shaped current development cycles.

“I don’t see it expanding further,” Zelnick told GamesIndustry.Biz.

“In fact, I would expect in many instances it may compress. I think you’re right in that our ability to engage with consumers on an ongoing basis has [resulted in] some less pressure on getting to market with an all-new title.

“But we find that intersection between the time it takes our creators to do the best work in the industry on the one hand, and what the consumer wants, recognising that building anticipation is a good thing.

“And we believe in resting titles as a great thing. I was a real outlier 12 years ago when we said we don’t think it makes sense to annualise non-sports titles, and now most people would agree. But I think eight years is probably too long.”

Grand Theft Auto fans have been waiting a long time to play the next game in the franchise, and there’s no official indication on how long this wait may continue.

But based on these recent comments, it seems likely that Rockstar is doing everything possible to speed up the development process.

Zelnick also commented on how these changes could come about, including better development tools and larger teams working on games.

There’s also the chance that games will see more content released over their expanded lifecycles and less at the start; something gamers have already started to notice.

As mentioned above, GTA 6 is expected to be released on the PS5 and Project Scarlett, rather than the PS4 and Xbox One. Take-Two will no doubt be a significant partner for each new platform, including new ones recently announced.

Rockstar Games was named among the developers that will be appearing on Google Stadia. The new streaming service arrives later in 2019 but won’t have a full launch until 2020.

Stadia removes the need for good hardware, making it possible for more people to play AAA games.

And each of these new platforms will support backwards compatibility of some kind, with Zelnick sharing his thoughts on its impact.

“I don’t see it as having much impact, but if it were to have an impact, it would be net positive as a marketing matter,” Zelnick adds. “As a practical matter, it really doesn’t matter. It’s not relevant.”
