Gears 5 Will Not Have Lootboxes

Amidst the long confusion and angst over lootboxes, including some looming federal investigations and head-scratching arguments of definition courtesy of EA, The Coalition has gotten ahead of it all by informing players that Gears 5 will not have lootboxes (or Gear Packs, as they were called in Gears of War 4).

The Coalition took to its community website to explain of how microtransactions will work in the game:

In Gears 5, our goal is to create a player-first experience when it comes to in-game content, and it starts with this:

-No Season Pass
-No Gear Packs
-DLC Maps are free for matchmaking and Private Play
-Exclusive earnable content in the all-new Tour of Duty system
-All store purchases are direct, no RNG so you always know what you will get

Though there are no lootboxes in Gears 5, it’s worth noting there are still microtransactions that boost XP progress in multiplayer, as well as customization options that can be brought with premium currency. Players can also acquire unique random items via supply drops, which are given to players based on time played, but The Coalition is adamant that they cannot be bought with premium currency.  You can read the full blog here.
