France earthquake: 5.1 magnitude tremors – Loire Valley hit by rare alert as homes shaken

Le Mans, Nantes, Rennes and Cannes also reported affects of the earthquake with struck in the town of Bressuire, near the Loire Valley in western France. The quake hit at around 8.50am local time. It follows a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Bordeaux in March last year.

The “moderate” quake prompted concern across the country, but no damage has been reported so far.

France’s national seismic service said the tremor was centred near the town of Bressuire, located between Angers and La Rochelle in the west of France.

Shocks were reported in cities including Le Mans, Nantes, Rennes and Caen.

The quake is a relatively strong one for France, where earthquakes are a rarity.
