Iran vs US: Tehran could hit America with a 'dirty bomb terror attack' warns expert

Tensions between the two states have reached breaking point over the past few weeks and US expert, Brandon J Weichert has warned of the Islamic Republic’s potential to launch a domestic attack in the US. Writing in the American Spectator, Mr Weichert warned of Iran’s capability to activate its “global nexus” of terrorist groups to attack the US. Mr Wiechert stated: “Iran would likely activate its global nexus of terrorist affiliates and charge them with attacking civilian targets in the United States, Europe, Israel, and the Sunni Arab countries.

“These well-trained, well-funded, and hard-to-track groups could even detonate a dirty bomb in an American city — greatly increasing the cost on the US.”

While Iran may not have the strength to take on the US in a conventional war, the expert warned the Islamic Republic has the capability to be incredibly effective in an unconventional one.

As well as utilising its list of terrorist affiliates, the Islamic Republic also has electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons which could “incapacitate” the US, claimed Mr Weichert.

Capable of destabilising the US, Mr Weichert added: “Iran could incapacitate the technological US invasion force before they could damage the Iranians.

“The Iranians would also launch a ceaseless wave of cyber attacks not just against American and allied military networks, but also against civilian networks here in the United States.”

Mr Weichert’s report comes as tensions between Iran and the US have reached a new low.

Following Iran’s downing of a US drone, House Republicans have released a statement calling for a response to the recent attack.

The statement also comes after the US has accused Iran of two separate attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman this month.

The statement from the US officials said: “Iran directly attacked a US asset over international water.

“This provocation comes a week after they attacked and destroyed two commercial tankers in international waters.

“There must be a measured response to these actions.”

Moreover, earlier this week, Iran also announced that its supply of low-enriched uranium would exceed limits previously agreed in the 2015 nuclear deal in what would be a flagrant breach of the accord.
