Everton agree £22m deal to sign Andre Gomes from Barcelona – deal to be done in 24 hours

The Portugal international spent the duration of the 2018-19 season on loan at Goodison Park and was one of the Toffees’ star performers.

Gomes made a total of 27 appearances for Marco Silva’s side, scoring one goal and picking up one assist.

The 23-year-old’s displays caught the eye of several teams, including those of Everton’s Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Express Sport understands Spurs were interested in signing the Portuguese and were willing to meet his release clause.

They have, however, been beaten to the punch by Everton, who agreed a £22million deal for the midfielder on Wednesday afternoon.

Everton are expected to announce the permanent signing of Gomes within the next 24 hours.

The Merseyside club’s agreement with Barcelona will be welcome news for Silva, who urged his bosses to do everything in their power to permanently acquire Gomes’ services.

“I know all the rumours around, but for me, the most important thing is what comes from Andre,” the Portuguese said of Tottenham’s interest in Gomes. At this moment, he has nothing new to say to me until now and this is the most important thing.

“I am 100 per cent sure when something will be decided in his mind, I will be one of the first people to know. Of course, we as a club have to do everything to try to sign him.”

Gomes believes his fellow countryman has gotten the best out of him, telling Sky Sports: “He’s (Silva) given me confidence to keep moving forward and to be happy.

“All the people here have been amazing with me, all the staff and my teammates.

“I know it’s difficult sometimes to have a football player on loan and wondering how the first contact will be, but the boys here have been amazing with me.”
