Trump brands Sadiq Khan a ‘disaster’ as London death toll rises to 58 in one day

The President voiced his opinion on the matter by re-tweeting a post by far-right commentator Katie Hopkins. He tweeted: “LONDON needs a new mayor ASAP. Khan is a disaster – will only get worse!” Trump’s reaction comes after a man in his 30s was stabbed to death in Tower Hamlets in east London yesterday.

He was the third person in just 24 hours to be killed after two teenagers were murdered in gun and knife attacks in other London boroughs on Friday.

A further three men were stabbed in a separate attack in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mr Khan said he was “sickened” by the attacks and the deaths of two teenage boys.

He said: “Our overstretched police are working around the clock to keep Londoners safe.

“They need our support to end this scourge of violence.”

However, Trump branded Mr Khan a “disaster” in his latest scathing rebuttal of the mayor.

Since Trump’s tweet, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn waded into the feud to defend Mr Khan.

He tweeted in reaction to the President’s post: “Absolutely awful to see Donald Trump using the tragedy of people being murdered to attack the Mayor.

“Sadiq Khan is rightly supporting the police to do their job while Katie Hopkins spreads hateful and divisive rhetoric.

“They seek to divide at a time we need to come together.”

It comes as earlier this month Trump called Mr Khan a “stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London” before he landed for his state visit.

In response to Mr Trump’s comments, a spokesman for Mr Khan said: “This is much more serious than childish insults which should be beneath the President of the United States

“Sadiq is representing the progressive values of London and our country warning that Donald Trump is the most egregious example of growing far right threat around the globe.”
