Lakers make Kemba Walker No 1 target in free agency after agreeing Anthony Davis trade

After failing to reach an agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans back at the deadline in February, the Lakers have finally got their next big star to partner LeBron James in Davis.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Lakers have given up six assets in total to complete the deal.

Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart have all been moved, along with three future first round picks, including this year’s No 4 pick.

The trade cannot be finalised until July 6, but the Lakers have been able to keep hold of Kyle Kuzma.

Now their attention will switch to free agency, where New York Times’ Marc Stein reports Walker has emerged as their No 1 priority.

“Kemba Walker will be a top target in free agency for the Lakers after they reached an agreement in principle to trade for Anthony Davis, according to league sources,” he tweeted.

By trading Ball away, the Lakers will need a star point guard to run their teams offence.

But with James being a ball dominant player, the Lakers will need a point guard able to play off the ball and be a dominant shooter in the league.

Walker fits that bill perfectly, and is coming off the best season of his career.

He was named third-team All-NBA for the 2018/19 season, which made him eligible for the supermax contract with the Charlotte Hornets.

But amazingly, Walker admitted earlier this week that he would be open to taking less than the supermax if it meant Charlotte could build a team around him.

The supermax would be worth $221million over five years, significantly more than the five-year, $190m max deal had he not been named in the All-NBA team.

He would take even less if he left the Hornets in free agency though, with other teams only able to offer him $140m over four years.

Kyrie Irving could also be a target for the Lakers, but he is being strongly linked with the Brooklyn Nets or New York Knicks.

Further down the list of potential point guard free agents would be former Laker D’Angelo Russell, who is a restricted free agent with the Nets.

Multiple reports have suggested Brooklyn will not look to re-sign Russell if they get Irving in free agency, opening up the possibility of him returning to the Staples Center.
