James Martin: ‘Is this a joke’ Saturday Morning host stunned by bizarre on-air moment

James Martin, 46, regularly entertains viewers with his delicious dishes which he displays on his ITV show, and it was no different today when he was joined by celebrity guests, Larry Lamb, 72, and Atul Kochar, 50. However, the TV chef was left seemingly stunned by his other guests after he admitted he “thought it was a joke” when he was first told about them. The London Vegetable Orchestra joined the television star but their bizarre talent is their ability to play music using vegetables as instruments which certainly surprised the television host. Introducing the band, James told viewers: “Please welcome to my house – I thought this was a joke – the London Vegetable Orchestra.

“It’s a serious thing.”

Turning his attention to the band organiser Tim, he mused: “This started with you, didn’t it?”

Tim replied: “Yes, I’m a recorder maker and when someone says can you make a recorder out of a carrot, I made one and got a couple of notes on it.

“And then we were telephoned by Tewell’s crisps who said can we make an advert.”

He continued: “And at the same time they put a notice up at the Royal Academy and these beautiful people answered,” as Tim turned towards his group members.

The group used carrots and pumpkins which were cut out into the shapes of flutes to perform their musical numbers.

The TV star later appeared impressed as they individually performed memorable songs including the Coronation Street theme tune before the chef took a turn himself with a carrot.

Meanwhile, James’ pal Chris Evans recently spilled on the TV chef on on his Virgin Radio Breakfast show last week.

During a conversation, Chris asked James if he could tell his listeners about his “extraordinary” deal with ITV.

James jokingly replied: “What that just keeps going?”

Chris then joked: “He [James] said how long do you want me to do this one? They [ITV] said as long you like. Every week? Yes, every week.”

Pretending to be James, he added: “When might you want me to stop?”

Flippantly pretending to be ITV, he added: “You just tell us when you want us to stop, but just don’t stop and carry on doing it.”

Laughing, James said: “That was it, that was the conversation.”

Chris went on to tell listeners the show was filmed from James’ home, admitting he was “jealous”.

He said: “It’s a massive TV show on once a week and it’ll run forever. It’s great to repeat shows like this.

“It’s going to be out there forever, you’ll get all the residuals.”

James Martin’s Saturday Morning airs weekly on ITV from 9.25am.
