Anne Hegerty: The Chase star speaks out on ‘disgusting’ Jeremy Vine show tweet about her

Anne Hegerty, 60, addressed criticism after The Jeremy Vine Show tweeted a particular quote from her recent interview on the Channel 5 programme. The Chase favourite was opening up about “issues” she had with her father on the show at the time, which their official page chose to highlight on Twitter. The original tweet shared a clip of The Governess talking to host Jeremy Vine, 54, about her family alongside the caption: “Seriously Dad, did you actually have to bring the women home to the house? “Anne Hegerty says although she was ‘fond’ of her father, there ‘were a lot of issues’ she had with him after he left on Christmas Eve when she was 12. @anne_hegerty | @TheJeremyVine | #jeremyvine.”

One of Anne’s fans took issue with the tweet, replying: “Might’ve guessed your show would leap on this aside… tut tut shame on you … (but it seems to be… ratings, ratings… we’ve got a scoop )… DISGUSTING!!!”

After spotting the comment, the quizzer appeared to be slightly baffled as she wrote back in view of her 124,000 followers: “What’s disgusting?”

The Twitter user responded: “Thought it was a bit cheeky of the show to want to tweet about your family’s dirty linen (it felt like they were revelling in some kind of scoop) BUT if you’re ok with it… then everything must be all well and good!”

Fortunately, the TV personality seemed perfectly comfortable with how the show had phrased the tweet.

She admitted: “Well, after all, I did say it. It’s not like I didn’t know I was on telly.”

During the candid interview with Jeremy, Anne revealed her dad “walked out” when she was younger.

The star divulged: “I did like him, I was fond of him, he was the only person who did encourage me to do things.

“But there are a lot of issues my brother and I had with him.”

Earlier this week, The Chaser defended some of the comments she made about her dad on Twitter.

While discussing inheritance, Anne stated it is not a child’s job to care for an elderly parent if they are not in their life the majority of the time.

Referring to the issue, she explained: “It’s not actually the child’s job to care for the adult parent. That is legally not the position.”

Jeremy responded: “It’s not legally the position, but it is morally the position though?”

Anne argued back: “Not if he walked out on Christmas Eve when you were 12.”

A user appeared to be unimpressed by Anne’s viewpoint on the subject as they commented underneath the video: “Parents that’ve spent the majority of their lives raising you may disagree…”

Anne hit back: “12 years was not a majority of my dad’s life, given that he lived to be 90.”

However, they continued to attempt to get their point across as they wrote: “I know your tale opened this issue, but it goes beyond you I’m afraid. Besides, twelve years and a major part in your very genesis surely earns him at least a small part of consideration?”

To which Anne replied: “Why is someone in New Jersey watching British TV anyway?”

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.

The Jeremy Vine Show airs weekdays at 9.15am on Channel 5.
