Khabib Nurmagomedov explains why he has no regrets over Conor McGregor brawl at UFC 229

Nurmagomedov made the first defence of his lightweight title against Conor McGregor last October at UFC 229.

The pair’s eagerly-anticipated grudge match was watched by 2.4million fight fans, who saw Nurmagomedov defeat his predecessor at the summit of the 155lbs division via fourth-round submission.

The bout, however, will forever be remembered for the massive brawl which ensured seconds after McGregor submitted to a neck crank.

Moments after registering the biggest victory of his career, Nurmagomedov sparked a huge melee by climbing over the Octagon wall and attempting to attack Dillon Danis, McGregor’s team-mate.

That act sparked further scuffles inside the cage and landed the Russian a nine-month suspension and a £390,000 ($500,000) fine.

One would assume Nurmagomedov would regret his decision to attack Danis given the fact he lost a quarter of his guaranteed purse.

‘The Eagle’, however, has no remorse for his actions that night at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

“No, nothing,” the Russian said when asked if he regretted his actions. “Sometimes you do something and you watch the situation – and you do something [bad]. But [I feel} nothing inside.

“If I have [a] chance one more time, I’m going to do this one more time. Maybe 100 times. It doesn’t matter.

Nurmagomedov recently talked up a rematch with McGregor, insisting he has ‘unfinished business’ with ‘The Notorious.’

But the 30-year-old has seemed to have changed his tune on a second showdown with the Irishman.

“The last three years he has only one victory and amateur boxing. How does he deserve a rematch?” Nurmagomedov said. “He tapped.

“He begged me, ‘Please don’t kill me.’ Now he’s talking about a rematch?

“Tony Ferguson on the line. People who have win streaks on the line. But not the guy who don’t win nothing the last three years … right now I’m focused on September 7.”

Nurmagomedov will defend his lightweight title against interim 155lbs champion Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi on September 7.

The Dagestani is expecting a tough bout against the in-form Poirier but already has one eye on a showdown with former interim titleholder Tony Ferguson, who he’s been scheduled to fight a staggering four times.

“He deserves a title shot in my opinion,” Nurmagomedov said. “But when the UFC asked him to fight Max Holloway, he didn’t take that fight. Right now, the problem is because of him.

“I don’t know why he didn’t take that fight.

“He took a regular fight with Cowboy (Cerrone). I don’t understand this.

“I don’t want to underestimate my opponent, Dustin. He’s a tough challenge for me and right now I don’t want to think about other opponents.”
