Birds of Prey: Margot Robbie says THIS about her upcoming Harley Quinn movie

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is being produced by one of its stars. Margot Robbie, who debuted as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, pitched the female-fronted R-rated superhero action movie to Warner Bros. Recently the star spoke to Vogue and described the upcoming project in three words.

What did Margot Robbie call Birds of Prey?

The star referred to the film as ‘less male gaze-y’ in her interview with Vogue.

The article read: “When we drop by the wardrobe trailer so that Robbie can try on a costume intended for the next day’s shoot—a sequined blazer, sports bra, and orange track shorts—I notice that this Harley seems more Sporty Spice than male fantasy.

“’That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer,’ says the film’s costume designer, Erin Benach, who previously worked on A Star Is Born.

“’Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y.’ Robbie says.”

SUICIDE SQUAD 2 CAST: THIS ACTOR WILL NOT RETURN TO THE SEQUEL

Birds of Prey has plenty of women both in front of and behind the camera, including the production company behind the film: LuckyChap.

LuckyChap is Margot Robbie’s still-young production company, through which she is producing Birds of Prey.

With Birds of Prey, Robbie is not only putting women at the forefront she is also making sure those characters are diverse women.

In an interview with Yahoo Movies, Robbie said: “Real life isn’t so one specific image, we’ve got to reflect that on screen.”

Birds of Prey’s screenwriter is Christina Hodson, who penned the hit Transformers reboot Bumblebee.

Bumblebee, like Birds of Prey, was heralded for the lack of lasciviousness and male-gaze and has helped reinvigorate the Transformers franchise.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) may do the same for the Suicide Squad at Warner Bros.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is out in UK cinemas on February 7, 2020.
