Google Home and the Amazon Echo share much in common; both are a product series comprised of smart speakers and smart displays.
Additionally, the duo both provide access to each tech giant’s respective virtual assistant that delivers a wealth of actions for users to harness.
Google and Amazon both sell multiple smart displays; as the name suggests, the relatively new hardware category offers the same connected home functionality as smart speakers, but they tout a panel that allows for additional features.
Google currently sells one smart display of its own dubbed the Nest Hub.
However, the firm will soon release a larger version of the product called the Nest Hub Max.
Meanwhile Amazon currently stocks two Echo devices that have displays on their front; the Echo Show and Echo Spot.
But, on June 26 the company will release a smaller version of the Show called the Echo Show 5 that, as the name suggests, sports a 5-inch screen.
While devices such as the Google Nest Hub and the Amazon Echo show are capable of streaming video, displaying photos and more, neither currently possesses the ability to stream content from Netflix.
However, it appears Google’s offering could soon receive such a feature.
9to5Google recently noticed a refreshed action listing for Netflix on Google’s Assistant site.
The streaming service was listed as working with “smart displays”, suggesting such an addition could be inbound.
The outlet also reported some smart display owners are seeing commands such as “next episode on Office Display” appearing as a suggestion on the page.
However, the feature does not appear to be live yet – 9to5Google said it was greeted with the message “Netflix can’t be played on smart displays yet” when it attempted to play content from the service.
It is unclear when the ability to stream Netflix content on Google smart displays could arrive.
However, if and when the hardware does receive support for the feature, it could give it a huge advantage over the Amazon Echo that does not boast such functionality natively.
