Rocketman 2: Will there be a sequel to the Elton John biopic?

Musical biopics have had a resurgence, with movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and Respect telling the stories of some of the world’s greatest singers. Rocketman launched into cinemas in the UK on May 22, 2019, and the Elton John biopic has hit a high note with critics. However, unlike with Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman’s inspiration is still alive and kicking meaning there is plenty of material left to cover.

Will there be a Rocketman 2?

According to Rocketman’s own producer, there could be a sequel in the future.

Matthew Vaugh told Screen Rant: “If people buy tickets and the film’s a hit, that gives us more of a chance to get the band back together again.

“If it dies, then there isn’t. The thing about making movies is it’s hard, but when it works and when it’s with people that you get on with, it really makes a difference.

“There was a lot of mutual respect, a lot of very talented people pushing each other to make really good art.”

Elton John is a man whose life is full of movie-perfect moments.

In his career, Elton John has made more than fifty Top 40 hits.

He also has seven consecutive number-one albums in the United States, 58 Billboard Top 40 singles, 27 Top 10 singles.

Four of those singles reached number two and nine which reached number one.

He is also an LGBTQ+ activist, HIV awareness advocate, and philanthropist.

The Rocketman biopic only focusses on John’s life throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

But it was in 1990 when John achieved his first solo UK number, and in 1994 he penned songs for The Lion King with Tim Rice.

Elton John was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1992 and is currently in the midst of his three-year farewell tour.

All this to say, there is plenty of material to cover in a potential sequel.

Critics have received Rocketman well, and the biopic currently holds a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

If Vaughn’s stipulations for a sequel are box office success and critical reception, a potential sequel seems likely.

Rocketman is now playing in cinemas.
