John Stones and Ross Barkley were caught on the ball in Guimaraes on Thursday night as England lost 3-1 after extra time.

Manchester City star Stones was dispossessed by Memphis Depay on the edge of the box, with Jordan Pickford saving the Lyon man’s effort. However, Quincy Promes’ effort after Pickford’s stop was guided in via Kyle Walker.

Barkley was next to cost the Three Lions in Portugal, with his sloppy pass playing in Manchester United flop Depay. He squared the ball to Promes who fired home to end England’s Nations League dream.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half after a Matthijs de Ligt foul in the area. However, the Ajax defender levelled the scoring in the second half.

Express Sport is on hand to reveal how England and Holland’s stars fared in Portugal.

ENGLAND

Pickford 7

His distribution was wild and sometimes wayward, but made some solid saves.

Walker 6

His pace was a life saver for England but lost aerial battle when De Ligt scored. Almost kept out Holland’s second goal but luck wasn’t on his side.

Stones 4

At fault for Holland’s second goal after losing it when he was last man. Needs to focus more on his decision making.

Maguire 5

Far from the World Cup hero’s best night in an England shirt.

Chilwell 7

Good going forward but got exposed defensively as Holland targeted him.

Rice 6

Read the game to good effect, dropped back to lend a hand in defence.

Barkley 6

Started brightly and was ambitious with his passing. At fault for Holland’s third goal as England overplayed again.

Delph 7

Tough and rugged, he put his foot in and also got forward with his energy.

Sancho 6

In and out of the game, picked passes going forward but missed big chance.

Sterling 6

Wore the armband with pride – and he worked tirelessly for his team.

Rashford 7

Ice cool penalty, led the line well but got injured and was subbed at half time.

Substitutes:

Kane, for Rashford, 46 mins, 6

Lingard, for Sancho, 61 mins, 6

HOLLAND

Cillessen 6

No chance with the penalty – did well to save Sancho’s header though.

Dumfries 6

Brilliant tackle to deny Rashford but struggled in the air. Booked.

De Ligt 6

Tragic mistake for Rashford penalty but atoned with his goal. Booked.

Van Dijk 7

His every touch was booed but it did not fluster him. Strong as ever.

Blind 7

Helped Dutch get wider than England managed and helped keep Sterling quiet.

De Roon 7

Very tidy in midfield, he barely missed a pass to keep England on back foot.

Wijnaldum 6

Maybe this was a bit soon for him after Saturday. Looked a bit leggy.

De Jong 7

Another strong midfield display but never quite produced that killer moment.

Bergwijn 7

Powerful and direct, his running caused England some early problems.

Depay 5

So often the dangerman, he seemed to be trying to be too spectacular. Did set up Holland’s third goal after Barkley’s howler.

Babel 7

His calm experience meant he was always a dangerous option for Holland.

Substitutes:

Promes (for Babel 68) 8 – his shot forced Walker’s own goal, netted Holland’s third goal after Depay put it on a plate.

Van De Beek (for De Roon 68) 5.
