D Day 75: Donald Trump kisses Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte at anniversary service

Mr Trump and Mr Macron have been said to enjoy a “bromance” at the beginning of their terms, when they were seen kissing, hugging and complimenting each other. But after the US President decided to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018, attacked European members of the NATO for not meeting their spending target and seemed to have labelled “very insulting” the French President’s proposal for an European Army, their relationship seemed to have gone cold.

However, as they gathered at Omaha Beach in Colleville-sur-Mer to commemorate and honour those who took part to the D-Day landings in 1944, the pair looked closer than ever.

Mr Trump was spotted greeting Mrs Macron with a kiss on the stage from which he gave a speech.

As they were shaking hands with the veterans who attended the touching event, Mr Macron touched and patted Mr Trump’s back.

And they were also seen sharing a kiss and shaking hands repeatedly at the end of the event.

Mr Trump, who sat on stage alongside with his wife Melania, watched Mr Macron awarding the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest award for merit, to five US veterans.

During the commemorations, the US President thanked the veterans attending, saying: “Our debt to you is everlasting.

“Today we express our undying gratitude. When you were young – these men enlisted their lives in a great crusade – one of the greatest of all times.

“Their mission is the story of an epic battle and the ferocious eternal struggle between good and evil.”
