James Martin: Saturday Morning TV chef reveals ‘rude awakening’ after shock car accident

James Martin, 46, the host of the ITV series Saturday Morning, spilled all about a disastrous moment when he was involved in a car accident on the way to a job interview. Chris Evans, 53, probed his pal on the start of his career where the TV chef talked about working in kitchens prepping dishes as a teenager when the incident took place. Speaking from the New Forest in Hampshire, the radio DJ asked: “And this is all very much where it started for you isn’t it?” James replied: “Yes, I started as a young kid, 19-years-old. I started working in the kitchens in London at 16.

“And then I applied for several jobs and this place kindly offered me one.”

The small-screen star then admitted he crashed into a lamp post whilst making his way through the front gate of one of the restaurants kitchens.

He continued: “A bit of a rude awakening to this place but I drove through the front gate instead of the back gate.

“The back gate was for the staff. I drove through the front gate and looked at something I shouldn’t have been while coming out of the health club and took out one of the lamp posts.”

A shocked Chris asked: “Did you really?”

James replied: “The car stopped right outside this front entrance with oil pouring all over the floor.”

Chris asked: “Your car?”

He added: “Yes, my car. Literally on my way to the interview.”

Meanwhile, the TV star also dished on his latest project after he joked he had been “roped” into performing at Chris’ charity festival CarFest 2019 this weekend.

The former Saturday Kitchen Live star revealed he will be playing his guitar to a Rolling Stones hit alongside two singers.

Chris asked his other guests KT Tunstall and Sophie Ellis-Bextor if they could give James some advice about performing to a huge crowd.

James took to Instagram to share the news about his venture.

In view of his 212,000 followers, he commented: “It’s official, announced on @virginradiouk by Chris Evans my mate… or rather ex mate [crying with laughter emoji].

“We, I say we, my band will play @carfestevent South Sat night, first ever gig all for @bbccin.

“Learning in a scout hut then 40k people! Be nice out there as every spare min spent practising!”

James Martin’s Saturday Morning airs Saturdays on ITV at 9.30am.
