Liverpool face Tottenham in the Champions League final on Saturday as they look to secure a sixth major European triumph.
Steven Gerrard captained the Reds to their fifth victory back in 2005, and is hoping that Jordan Henderson will lead them to glory this weekend.
Liverpool are favourites to beat Tottenham after winning their two Premier League meetings this season, but Harry Kane’s return could help them pull off a shock.
Kane has been absent since going off injured during Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Despite the 25-year-old declaring himself fit, Gerrard is certain that only Mauricio Pochettino can make the correct call.
“I think it’s a very tough question,” Gerrard told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Pochettino has seen him on a daily basis, he’ll know all his numbers in training and he’ll be able to compare those numbers to when he’s been fit and scoring goals.
“If the numbers in training are telling me as a manager that he’s fine, he’s fit, he’s sharp, Harry Kane plays, it’s as simple as that.
“I don’t think you’d be able to live with yourself if it didn’t go well and your best player, your iconic player is sitting on the bench behind you.
“But if the numbers in training say he’s not 100%, he’s 80-90%, then the sensible thing is to use him from the bench.”
Tottenham hero Glenn Hoddle also had his say on whether Kane should start, and backed the World Cup golden boot winner to start on the bench.
He told talkSPORT: “I’m absolutely delighted that he’s fit, but I definitely wouldn’t start him.
“I think what a sight it would be for the Spurs fans and his team-mates if he’s there with half-an-hour to go and the game is hanging on an inch or is heading into extra-time.
“What a sight to see him come on with Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son if goals are needed and what a sight if they are hanging onto the game, because he can hold the ball up.
“The tempo of the game is going to be absolutely incredible at the beginning of the game, Liverpool like to press and play that high tempo, I don’t think he’ll be ready for that sort of pace.
“I really feel that once the game is settled in the second-half and he’s coming on fresh, I think that’s where he can have a real impact.”
