Avengers Endgame: Chris Hemsworth opens up on what it was like being ‘fat Thor’ on set

The actor’s character Thor was seen having gained weight in Avengers Endgame, after the storyline flashed forward five years. It was a result of the huge grief and guilt he felt after the substantial losses he suffered in previous Marvel movies; such as losing his parents, his brother, and his home planet, not to mention failing to stop Thanos from executing the Snap. It has already been revealed that the actor wore a suit and had help from the VFX team in achieving the look, rather than gaining weight himself – and on tonight’s Graham Norton Show, he speaks out on what his experience on set was like.

“I wore a prosthetic latex suit that weighed 60-70lbs,” he said.

“I had so much fun and got a lot of cuddles.

“I felt like Santa Claus.”

Indeed, the weight of the suit has previously been discussed by directors the Russo brothers, who said they feared for Hemsworth’s condition as a result.

“We had to toggle back and forth. While we were shooting Endgame where he was heavier we had to do some pickup shots for Infinity War, so he would have to go back and forth between those two looks,” Anthony Russo told Business Insider.

“So he had to wear a bodysuit, and it was quite heavy.

“That suit started to wear on his back, which was scary when you have someone who has to be so physical.”

What’s more, the heat of Atlanta will have been tough on the star.

“We were shooting in Atlanta, so exterior stuff in Atlanta in the summer was brutal,” Anthony added.

“The actors’ costumes don’t breathe very well.”

Also on tonight’s Graham Norton Show, Hemsworth speaks about his role on the new Men In Black movie – which throws him back together with Thor Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson.

“It’s an extension of the original set up, which was brilliant,” he teased.

“It’s got a different aesthetic, but with all the fun and action of the original. Everyone loved the first one and we’ve just enhanced it.”

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight at 10:35pm on BBC One.
