Android BOOST – Your next smartphone could come with a powerful update

Android is Google’s mobile platform harnessed by over 2.5 billion devices across the globe.

Google makes its own hardware that takes advantage of the operating system but for the most part products that run Android are produced by other OEMs.

One of the most fundamental components in any smartphone is its processor that gives it the power to perform functions such as opening applications.

ARM Holdings, a British semiconductor and software firm, is renowned for designing the fundamental groundwork for the majority of chipsets housed inside smartphones across the globe.

Given the firm’s huge importance in the industry, when it makes new announcements it is worth taking note.

ARM recently discussed a new CPU core and GPU that are anticipated to radically improve the overall performance of smartphones in 2020.

Dubbed the ARM Cortex-A77 CPU and ARM Mali-G77 GPU respectively, the former promises to deliver a 20 percent increase in instructions per cycle (IPC).

In layman’s terms, this should result in faster performance during heavy tasks.

Moreover, it was also emphasised the CPU should also be more capable when it comes to delivering machine learning, too.

Meanwhile, the firm’s new GPU was said to deliver nearly a 40 percent performance improvement over its predecessor, the Mali-G76.

Additionally, ARM was also keen to explain the new GPU should be 30 percent more efficient.

Announcing the duo, the British company said: “Every new smartphone experience begins with more hardware performance and features that enable developers to unleash further software innovation.

“For them, the CPU is more critical than ever as it handles general-compute tasks, as well as much of the device’s ML compute which must scale beyond today’s limits.

“The same holds true for more immersive untethered AR/VR applications, and HD gaming on the go.”

Overall, the new technology discussed by ARM appears set to improve the general performance of devices in addition to graphics and machine learning performance.

It is possible the firm’s latest innovations could debut in Android and iOS smartphones next year.
