Avengers Endgame box office ‘COIN-TOSS chance of topping Avatar as biggest movie EVER’

This weekend Avengers Endgame topped $800 million domestically in just 32 days, becoming only the second film to do so after Star Wars The Force Awakens, which ended its US run on $937 million. Meanwhile, on a worldwide scale, Avengers Endgame is almost at the $2.7 billion, just behind the most successful movie of all time, 2009’s Avatar, on $2.787 billion. However, despite a record-breaking opening of $1.2 billion in its first five days, the Marvel movie may not top James Cameron’s movie after all.

The Avengers Endgame box office takings have really slowed down after the film’s explosive opening.

In fact, the film was only No 1 for three weeks in a row before being topped by John Wick Chapter 3 last week and now Aladdin.

Let’s also not forget the strong performance by Detective Pikachu and the upcoming challenge from next week’s opening of Godzilla 2.

True, Avengers Endgame has topped Titanic, but taking into account inflation, Cameron’s other biggest movie technically made a lot more money.

The other three sequels will follow every two years, with Avatar 5 completing the five-film series in 2027.

This clever marketing move means there will be a Star Wars and Avatar movie on rotation each Christmas from 2021-2027.

The Game of Thrones show-runners are heading up a new Star Wars trilogy, rumoured to be about the Knights of the Old Republic, with Christmas release dates for 2022, 2024 and 2026.

Avengers Endgame is out now.
