Why Antoine Griezmann may be tempted to join Man Utd despite no Champions League football

United are looking to sign in-demand France forward Antoine Griezmann this summer, according to reports.

Griezmann had been linked to a big summer transfer to Barcelona.

But United are hoping to buy the striker from Atletico, and are ‘actively pursuing’ the deal.

Despite not having the prospect of Champions League football at Old Trafford next season, United could tempt Griezmann to make the move as he’d be the focal point of the rebuilt squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would look to Griezmann, who scored 15 goals in La Liga last season, as a playmaker for next season.

He could then build a new team based around the French forward, revealed the Mirror.

Griezmann is also a good friend of Paul Pogba, who may talk him into signing for United.

Meanwhile, his brother, Theo Griezmann, is a big United fan, and it’s believed that his support for the Premier League may influence Antoine’s decision.

United are expected to trigger Griezmann’s £107 million release clause in his contract with Atletico.

Should the deal go through, it’ll be a club-record signing, behind Pogba, who joined from Juventus in 2016 for £89 million.

Griezmann shocked his Atletico teammates last week when he announced he was to leave the club this summer.

He announced his decision by releasing a video on social media, claiming that he was moving to a new club.

Atletico Madrid’s President, Enrique Cerezo said his decision to leave the club was final, and he wished him luck for the future.

“It is irreversible. The only thing I tell him is that he has a lot of luck where he goes,” he said.

“And, that at least they treat him as we have treated him here.”

United’s decision to target Griezmann came after they gave up on signing Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho.

Solskjaer had wanted to buy Sancho as he looks to start a new era of young talent at United.

But, after they finished sixth in the Premier League last season and therefore won’t feature in next season’s Champions League, it’s believed that United have given up hope of signing Sancho.
