Outlander season 5 spoilers: Laoghaire MacKenzie returns in major Claire Fraser twist?

Outlander fans have seen Laoghaire MacKenzie flit in and out of the last three seasons of the drama series.

And ahead of the fifth series returning to Starz and Amazon Prime, Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to the actress who plays the fan-favourite character about whether or not she would be making a comeback.

Discussing her future on the show, Nell said: “Well, I know that Laoghaire comes back in book seven of Outlander and Diana [Gabaldon] just keeps writing theses books! So there is a potential [of it happening].

“And also, Laoghaire has appeared in a series of Outlander on the television that she wasn’t in the book, so we never know when she’s going to rear her angry head.”

Should the housewife make a reappearance, Nell spoke about the type of storyline she would like to explore with her character.

In more recent scenes, viewers have seen Jaime Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Laoghaire struggle to get on with one another.

And Nell discussed the possibility of the two families mending their relationship, potentially even becoming friends or one big family.

“I like to think so,” Nell said. “I like to think so.”

And as for the scene between them, the actress continued: “I think there’s a potential scene that could be written that isn’t in the book where Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Laoghaire confront each other as things are now, that could be really interesting to see.”

As for what is going to happen in the new series, it is likely the fifth season is going to be based on the fifth novel called The Fiery Cross.

Those who have read the books know how the novel sees Claire and Jamie now settled at Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina and living happily with their family.

But as always, their domestic bliss looks set to be shattered by the approaching American Revolution.

There could also be fewer sex scenes in season five after the stars of the show recently spoke out about some of the more intimate moments getting cut from the fourth run.

Alongside this, actor Sam recently teased a major twist for the series, which is going to shock fans.

Taking to his personal Twitter page, he posted “…#Droughtlander UPDATE. Have read several scripts for S5! You won’t be disappointed! Can’t wait to get started.”

As for when it will return, previous seasons of Outlander have premiered at different times of the year including August, April and September.

Season three debuted in September 2017 and the fourth cycle premiered on November 4, 2018, so it seems likely that the fifth outing will be released in autumn 2019.

The fifth season is likely to consist of 13 episodes like the previous three runs of Outlander.

Episodes will be airing on a weekly basis in the US on Starz before being made available the following day on Amazon Prime for UK fans.

Outlander returns to Starz and Amazon Prime later this year.
